Course Objectives: The rice industry in Asia is transforming rapidly. This is being driven by increasing vertical integration of the industry itself, labor migration with subsequent labor shortages at the farm level, input-output price squeeze and pressure for improved efficiencies in nutrient and water management, greater mechanized service provision, demands by the consumer for quality rice that meets GAP standards, and the challenges of the extremes emanating from climate change. IRRI is committed to nurturing the environment for a new generation of scientists, professional extension agents, public and private, through technical knowledge coupled with practical competency for rice production and seed production from seed to market and competency with the latest ICT tools and the softer skills for working with farmers, extension material development and operating within a multi- actor rice industry environment. This training program is composed of training activities on (1) the Basics of Rice Production that will deal on the production and post handling of rice grains and (2) visits to different organizations or people including scientists and farmers who are directly working on rice research and production accordingly. a. Basics of Rice Production training The Basics of Rice Production course is a 1-week training or orientation to rice science, IRRI researches and facilities, and production practices from seed preparation to post harvest. It is developed to update the participants on rice knowledge and technologies concerning management practices and new technology associated with wetland rice farming. This course will enable the participants to:
The program aside from training activities at IRRI, will also include visit to local rice farming community in nearby farms, if possible (actual farmer's field) outside IRRI. For special request, meetings or short discussion with IRRI researchers and scientist may be arranges. And, field trips to relevant institutions will be included in the program (as necessary). A fundamental of this course is learning and understanding rice as a crop, its importance, and how rice is grown. Course Topic Outline:
