GROUP TRAINING

Trainees under the Group Training program are scientists and development staff from the National Agricultural Research and Extension System. They are recommended to attend the IRRI short-term training course.

Group training program addresses the needs of scientists and development staff to enhance their expertise, knowledge, and skills. Twenty-five to thirty group-training courses are conducted each year at IRRI.

The courses are general to highly specialized covering rice-related knowledge and technology. The recent move of IRRI toward more strategic research led the courses to evolve "upstream". "Tailored" version or developed courses of some international courses for specific target audiences are offered. These special courses are held at IRRI or in the country of intended participants.

Cost

Course fees are approximately US$1,468 per month per participant. This covers board and lodging, a modest stipend, local travel, group accident/medical insurance, books, training supplies, services, and facilities.

The sponsor is expected to provide international airfare (if required), a shipping allowance, and enroute expenses to its participants. Costs for special courses vary such as those held at IRRI headquarters may be somewhat higher than regular courses due to the specific nature of the requested topic. A few scholarships are available for qualified national scientists.

Collaborative In-Country Training Program

IRRI collaborates with other institution and organizations for in-group training courses offered outside IRRI headquarters. Courses focus on the production level and skill training needs of lesser-developed national programs. These programs are implemented on regional and national basis.

Regional Training

Regional courses are versions of IRRI-developed courses offered in English. Various national institutions collaborate with IRRI to implement these courses.

Cost

Regional training fees are comparable with courses offered at IRRI headquarters. These courses cost US$1,253 per month. This covers board and lodging, a modest stipend, local travel, group accident/medical insurance, books, training supplies, services, and use of facilities.

Sponsors of a particular training course must provide the international airfare if it is needed. They are expected to provide the shipping allowance, and enroute expenses. We encourage application for support from other sources since no IRRI scholarships are made available for regional courses.

National Training

National courses are focused on target scientists and country-specific training needs. These are often conducted in the national language and translated in IRRI-developed training materials.

Cost

Costs vary depending on length, subject matter, and number of resource persons. Generally, however, the cost per participant is lower than those conducted at IRRI headquarters or in the regional training sites.
