ABOUT US

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is an educational and research institute dedicated to creating a better world for rice farmers and consumers through the scientific discovery of superior rice farming technologies.

IRRI's founding members realized that research without education and training would have little or no impact on rice farmers and consumers. Forty years later, this guiding principle has continued to drive IRRI's training mission. Integrated training and extension efforts provide a link between science and practice.

IRRI's Training Advantages

IRRI, its name, and its reputation are globally recognized as "rice science research and leadership."

  • A knowledge base of rice science supported by more than 40 years of research.
  • A staff of internationally recognized experts in rice science.
  • Strong linkage with all major rice growing countries.
  • Excellent research and training facilities.

How important is rice?

Rice is Asia's most economically and culturally important food crop and its production is regarded as the single most important economic activity on the planet.

More than 2.7 billion people - most of them poor - rely on rice as their major source of food. By the year 2025, this number will grow to 3.9 billion people.

Why build capacity in rice science?

  • 130 million farmers require knowledge of best practices to reduce poverty, increase productivity, reduce drudgery, pursue off-farm income, and protect their environment.
  • Extension workers (government, NGOs, and other intermediaries) require knowledge of best practices to pass on to farmers.
  • Researchers need to be familiar with the latest methodologies to develop technologies that are relevant to farmers and their circumstances.

How can you help?

Would you like to help build national capacity and better the lives of poor rice consumers and producers around the world?

If so, IRRI has a training fund and will create fellowships in the name of those who donate financial resources for:

  • post-graduate scholars
  • on-the-job trainees
  • participants in short courses
  • in-country training
